Mountain Village 1890, Bull Shoals, Arkansas
The Doctor’s Office

Doctor's office in rear of bank.

In the back room of this particular bank was the Village doctor’s office. In that era, the doctor was usually like the circuit riding preacher – he had an office in each town, usually in the rear of another building. Residents could tell if the doctor was "in" if his shingle was out.

The doctor usually traveled by buggy, carrying most of his tools with him, but sometimes he had to go by horseback when he was traveling in the Ozark backwoods where a buggy couldn’t go. He usually checked at every house, checking to see if anyone was sick or needed dental work using his foot-operated treadle drill.
